Course overview

SFJ Awards Level 3 Award in Initial Incident Command in Fire and Rescue Services (N.O.G. Level 1) aims to develop and assess the knowledge and understanding of the U.K. Incident Command System and the practical performance of command skills of FRS learners in Initial Incident Command in accordance with NOS WM7.

Successful completion of the course will confirm that learners are ready to work as a Level 1 Incident Commander.  

During the course Learners will have the opportunity to perform several operational and command roles within the Incident Command System for example:

  • Incident Commander
  • Appliance Commander (IC2)
  • Command Support Officer (Level 1) 
  • BA Entry Control Officer
  • BA Team Leader

Learning outcomes

Following the completion of the award, the learner will: 

  • Understand the key principles of the Incident Command System 
  • Understand the roles and responsibilities of personnel within the
  • Incident Command Structure 
  • Understand the management of risk at operational incidents 
  • Understand effective communication at operational incidents 
  • Be able to plan an initial response to an operational incident 
  • Be able to implement actions at an operational incident to meet
  • planned objectives 
  • Be able to close down the operational phase of an incident. 
  • Be able to review a response to an operational incident.

How is the course assessed?

It is important to note that assessment on this course results in a straight Pass or Fail.

The stages of assessment are:

  • Course Workbook: Written assignments to assess knowledge and understanding.
  • Development exercise: Practical Performance Assessment utilising XVR
  • Summative assessment: Practical Performance Assessment utilising a ‘live’ simulated incident on the incident ground at FSC or the XVR simulation platform if off-site facilities cannot accommodate a ‘live’ simulated incident.

Learner feedback

Learners will receive written and verbal feedback including:

  • A Learner’s Performance Report (LPR). 
  • A development exercise assessment report. 
  • An Appliance Commander (IC2) assessment report. 
  • A summative assessment report.
  • A professional discussion with a Tutor/Assessor
