Level 4 Certificate in Fire Safety (Fire Auditors)

Course overview and learning outcomes

This is part of a suite of qualifications that are nationally recognised both within and outside of the Fire and Rescue Service arena.

The content of the qualifications is based around the National Occupational Standards (NOS) developed by Skills for Justice, the sector skills council that is responsible for the FRS sector.

The qualifications are intended to both support and formalise development in the Fire Safety Officer role, and also allow a wider recognition and accreditation of the role that you are performing.

This course utilises a variety of teaching delivery methods (blended learning).  Some of it will be face to face in a classroom environment, some of it may be done through e-learning, and some of it may be directed learning – this will be done via a computer but is not itself e-learning – more that you will be asked to either read things and comment, or download activities and complete them before uploading them to be marked.

How long will it take?

Each module varies in length – the number of guided learning hours (GLH) or more simply the length of time it is expected to take is set by the qualification body.  There is some flexibility in that in addition to any formal learning, you are also expected to undertake learning in your own time – which does include both work time and anything you decide to do for yourself.  This can take many forms and can include shadowing a colleague, spending time reflecting on issues and methods, reading journals and publications relating to the role – so probably exactly what you are already doing at various times in the day.

The course is spread out over the timescale decided by your organisation.

What resources will I need?

Many of the learning resources you need as reference materials will be provided by the FSC, however copyright prevents us from giving free access to some materials although it is expected that you will be able to access these documents through your employer as part of your normal role: the RRO, the CLG guides to Fire Risk Assessment, BS9999, LACORS etc.

You will need to bring a scale rule to most of the modules for use when interpreting plans.

How is the course assessed and accredited?

This varies from module to module, and will be a combination of both formal and informal assessment.  There will be practical tests for some parts, and for others it may involve answering a number of short questions, or completing longer assessments using information provided.

The aim all the way through is to allow you to demonstrate you have gained the requisite skills, knowledge and understanding about the issues concerned, and so that when you are successful you can be confident you have met all of the required learning outcomes, which themselves have been derived from the NOS.
