Firefighter 1 Development Programme

Course overview and learning outcomes

Our Firefighter 1 course is a modularised programme which equips new entrants to the Fire and Rescue Service, Civil Defence or Oil and Gas Industry, (or those wishing to apply) with the foundation knowledge, skills and understanding to enable them to undergo further on-station acquisition, application training and development.

The course is broken down into a series of modules, each with their own key learning outcomes.

  • Foundation Skills
  • Fire Behaviour and Tactical Ventilation
  • Special Service Calls
  • Breathing Apparatus
  • Road Traffic Collision
  • First person on Scene
  • Hazardous Materials and Scenarios

On successful completion of this course, learners will achieve the following specific NFPA standards:

  • NFPA 1001 Standard for Firefighter Professional qualifications
  • NFPA 1072 Standard for Competence of Responders to Hazardous Materials Incidents - Awareness Level
  • NFPA 1072 Standard for Competence of Responders to Hazardous Materials Incidents - Operations Core with Missions Specific PPE and Product Control Levels.

Who should attend and key benefits

This course is designed as a foundation-training programme for firefighting recruits new to the industry. Due to the intensive nature of the programme learners will need to:

  • Have been through a robust recruitment and selection process
  • Be fit for full operational duties in accordance with Service requirements
  • Be provided with full fire kit, which conforms to current standards

This course is also aimed at those individuals seeking employment as firefighter and who require NFPA qualification to do so. In addition to the criteria stated above, it is also desirable that learners have a basic working knowledge of health and safety requirements and the risk assessment process.

How is the course assessed and accredited?

The course follows a robust and vigorous assessment process incorporating:

  • Observations and practical skill assessments on core firefighter skills throughout the programme carried out against specific assessment criteria
  • Verbal assessment through regular Q&A sessions, 1:1 reviews and professional discussions
  • A series of written subject matter assessments
  • All assessment is against the NFPA 1001 FF1 standard
