This course is specifically designed to develop experienced fire safety practitioners or those working within the healthcare arena, in relation to design and operation of healthcare premises.
It provides learners with an understanding of the relevant Firecode suite of documents (Health Technical Memorandum) concentrating on applications for new build and alterations of existing healthcare premises. These HTM documents also provide a bench mark standard for fire risk assessment in many healthcare premises.
Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of the course, learners will be able to define the legislative framework and consultation procedures relating to the design and operation of these premises and assess design submissions.
This course is aimed at hospital fire safety advisers and aspiring hospital fire safety advisers or newly appointed hospital fire safety advisers; other staff who require training in hospital fire safety; hospital fire safety advisers, managers and engineers from fire & rescue services. It is also suitable for facilities managers in the public and private sectors requiring training on healthcare fire safety management, and those involved in providing advice on the methods for achieving fire protection appropriate to the assessed fire risk within existing, proposed or altered healthcare premises. Other interested parties include, fire engineering practitioners and regulatory bodies who may have responsibility for advising or validating hospital fire safety design submissions.
Course Entry Criteria
Learners should be in, or be about to commence, a fire safety role in healthcare premises or a local authority fire & rescue service. Learners should be able to assess the means of escape in their work environment and possess a basic understanding of fire safety principles. An appreciation of topics covered in the fire safety healthcare foundation module (or equivalent) will provide adequate preparation.
Learners will be current with Firecode guidance in relation to healthcare premises, and recognise best practice. The approach will focus on ensuring learners can apply the relevant knowledge back in the workplace.
This course is assessed against the learning outcomes using a plan exercise and a supplementary written question paper. A certificate of attendance is awarded upon completion of the course which qualifies for guided learning hours.
It will assist with the demonstration of knowledge and understanding required by elements FS6 and FS8 (optional) of the National Occupational Standards, which may lead to the Skills for Justice level 4 Diploma in Fire Safety.
