Course overview and learning outcomes

This 2 week course provides delegates with the basic underpinning knowledge, skills and understanding required by a firefighter to perform safely and effectively whilst wearing BA at operational incidents.

Learning Outcomes
By the end of the module, delegates will have demonstrated understanding in :

  • Breathing Apparatus
  • Physiology of respiration
  • Set description , assessment and removal
  • Face fit seal and donning procedures
  • Fresh Air Wear
  • Working in smoke and darkness
  • Varied conditions
  • Gauge readings, turn around times and working durations
  • Movement in smoke and darkness
  • Search procedures/Casualty locating and handling
  • Search and locate in smoke and darkness
  • Entry control procedures – Entry Control Board/Main Control Procedures
  • BA guidelines and how to follow
  • Confined spaces
  • Fire behaviour theory

Who should attend and key benefits

This course is designed as a foundation training programme and is open to wholetime, retained and volunteer firefighters. It is also available to overseas and industrial fire & rescue services.

Delegates must:

  • be fit for full operational duties in accordance with Service requirements
  • attend with full fire kit, which conforms to current standards (provision can be made for delegates traveling from outside the UK)*

 *Where English is not spoken as a first language delegates must demonstrate understanding to IELTS Band 4.5 or equivalent.

Develops and applies the core knowledge and skills required to perform safely and effectively whilst wearing BA at operational incidents. Practice and observation will take place in a series of realistic simulations and scenarios.

How is the course assessed and accredited?

Assessment is through observation in a series of practical exercises against specific assessment criteria.

This course is underpinned by National Occupational Standards FF 1, FF2, FF3, FF4, FF5, FF6, FF7 & FF8
