Course overview and learning outcomes

With major developments in car safety over the last decade and a global shift towards the electrification, today's emergency crews now face far greater challenges and complexities in extricating casualties safely from vehicles. In order to ensure that our RTCI course continues to meet learner requirements, a number of developments have now been incorporated to enable delivery of a more extensive and in-depth curriculum.

The new 9-day course includes:

  • Exposure to latest developments in new vehicle technologies including Electric Vehicles (EV’s)
  • Exposure to brand new vehicle construction during visit to major motor manufacturer
  • Large Goods Vehicle Workshop (introduction)
  • Review of the very latest extrication techniques
  • Vehicle collision investigation
  • Workshop focusing on complex vehicle stabilisation methods
  • Focus on extrication planning
  • Guidance on how instructors can source reliable information to inform best practice
  • Attendance of pre-hospital clinicians (doctors and paramedics) to promote multi agency professional discussion
  • One-day trauma care CPD event in collaboration with Kingston University and St George’s Hospital, London
  • Fully immersive live casualty simulation used during exercises
  • Purpose-built training arena to provide relative comfort, ensuring learners can give full attention to the task at hand

This course provides the skills, knowledge and understanding to enable learners to design and deliver training on road traffic collision specialist equipment, techniques and procedures across a wide range of realistic scenarios. Topics will include:

  • The team approach 
  • Exercise planning, delivery and review
  • Extrication planning 
  • Risk assessment methodology
  • Modern safety systems 
  • Rescue techniques 
  • Casualty care  
  • Commercial vehicles 
  • Modern vehicle construction 
  • Collision investigation procedures 
  • Specialist RTC equipment

After successful completion of the course, learners will be able to:

  • State the process to follow when delivering RTC instruction 
  • Outline the legislation relating to attending road traffic collisions 
  • Summarise the health and safety requirements of RTC instruction
  • Identify the recent development in vehicle technology and design relevant to RTC operations 
  • Deliver RTC instruction 
  • Deliver training on the six phases of rescue 
  • Deliver casualty extrication training in line with the six phases of rescue 
  • Debrief learners on their performance 
  • Review own practice

Who should attend and key benefits

The Road Traffic Collision Instructor Course is aimed at Fire service personnel who are about to take up a position or who are responsible for the delivery of road traffic collision training and development, at all levels within the fire service. The course would be of benefit to operational Crew and Watch Managers who regularly attend road traffic collisions. Other attendees who may find the course of benefit include; Motor sports rescue technicians, paramedics, pre-hospital doctors e.g. Basics. 

Learners should:

  • Have completed a teaching or training qualification (service or national level)
  • Be able to use technology appropriately to support learning
  • Be fit for full operational duties in accordance with service requirements 
  • Complete the pre course e-learning modules identified in the joining instructions

How is the course assessed and accredited?

This course leads to a level 3 SFJ(A) accredited qualification. The course is assessed against the learning outcomes throughout, using practical observation and testing of underpinning knowledge successful completion of this course will see the learner receive 47.5 Institute of Fire Engineers (IFE) Continual Professional Development (CPD) hours.
