Fire Safety Foundation (Fire Safety Level 3)

Course overview and learning outcomes

The aim of this course is to provide the knowledge and understanding of core fire safety principles including the technical, legislative and practical skills required to support the role of fire safety auditor and create a solid base for further learning.

After successful completion of the course, and relevant work experience delegates will be able to:

  • Specify and state the design considerations of fire detection and warning systems
  • Identify circumstances in which the provision of a fire warning system is appropriate
  • Recognise situations where a fire warning system may have become ineffective as a result of a change of circumstances within the premises
  • Recognise the need for emergency lighting
  • Describe the design of an emergency lighting system
  • Recognise situations where an emergency lighting system may have become ineffective as a result of a change of circumstances within the premises
  • Recognise the requirements of an effective testing and maintenance regime for both types of systems

Who should attend and key benefits

The course is designed for individuals new to fire safety or new in the role of a fire safety advisor. It is also suitable for managers in local authority fire and rescue service and in the public and private sectors. Course entry criteria delegatesshould be in a fire safety role and should have basic understanding of fire. This module is not intended for operational personnel.

The learning on this course will support the development of delegates to perform a role within a technical fire safety department as an auditor.

How is the course assessed and accredited?

The course is assessed against a set of learning outcomes using a variety of methods including pre course assignments, inspections, exercises during the course and a short final written assessment during the course. A certificate of attendance is awarded upon completion of the course. 

The course is aligned to the learning outcomes for units 1 and 3 Level 3 Certificate in Fire Safety (Fire Auditors), the option exists to add in unit 2.

Please be aware that significant additional work will be required post course in order to generate sufficient evidence to gain the Level 3 certificate.
