Course overview and learning outcomes

This course has been designed for personnel likely to attend operational incidents involving heavy vehicles who require an enhanced level of knowledge and understanding in order to facilitate a safe and efficient risk managed outcome. The aim is to develop delegates' knowledge and understanding in the techniques and procedures for dealing with incidents involving rescue from heavy transport, including passenger vehicles in line with National Operations Guidance for Transport.

Learning Outcomes
After successful completion of the course, delegates will be able to: 

  • demonstrate a high level of knowledge and skills in the extrication techniques and procedures relevant for dealing with rescues from heavy transport
  • demonstrate the practical application of the procedures and techniques laid down in the Fire Service Manual and National Operational Guidance for dealing with incidents involving heavy vehicles
  • describe the construction of LGV's, coaches/buses and trains
  • demonstrate stabilisation/space creation techniques applicable to heavy transport
  • list and be able to utilise specialist equipment
  • describe hazard identification specific to heavy transport
  • Stabilisation and Management of a variety of heavy vehicles
  • Space creation and extrication techniques
  • Stabilisation, Cribbing techniques and lifting plans

Who should attend and key benefits

Fire service personnel who are experienced in road traffic rescue techniques and have a thorough knowledge of current procedures, who are responsible for the delivery of training and development, at all levels within the fire service. Course Entry Criteria Delegates should be competent in RTC and owing to the operational and physical demands of this course, must:

  • Be fit for full operational duties in accordance with the FRS requirements
  • Attend with full PPE which conforms to recognised and agreed standards

This course provides delegates with an awareness and appreciation of the hazards, risks and complex issues associated with incidents involving heavy vehicles.

How is the course assessed and accredited?

This course is assessed against the learning outcomes using practical observation. Fire Service College certification is awarded for successful completion of the course.
