Course overview and learning outcomes

This course is designed to contribute to the delegates' continuous professional development in the operational tactics of firefighting in ships and offshore installations.

Topic areas covered will include:

  • Ship construction
  • Interpreting ship plans
  • Stability
  • Ship firefighting tactics

After successful completion of the course, delegates will be able to:

  • Demonstrate a planned approach to managing and supporting the management of a marine incident
  • Recognise the key information required to maintain safe working conditions on and around a vessel on fire
  • Recognise the level of resource requirements needed to support the successful resolution of a ship-board incident
  • Demonstrate an understanding of ship construction and the implications this has on firefighting and rescue operations

Who should attend and key benefits

The course is aimed at firefighters and supervisory managers. Course Entry Criteria Owing to the operational and physical demands of the course, delegates must:

  • Be fit for full operational duties in accordance with service requirements
  • Be competent within service requirements for working at height and near water
  • Attend with full fire kit, which conforms to the standards agreed and recognised by the CFBACs and UK FRS

This course has been reviewed and updated to provide delegates with a unique opportunity to develop their knowledge and skills in operational firefighting and tactics on board ships. It provides an opportunity to experience realistic firefighting conditions and to develop skills required of the first crews on scene

How is the course assessed and accredited?

Practical skills are assessed through observation and technical knowledge and understanding of tactics is assessed by a final written exam.

This programme is aligned to National Occupational Standards FF3, FF4, and WM7.
