Fire Behaviour Training Instructors

Course overview and learning outcomes

Fire Behaviour Training forms a vital part of the overall strategy for Breathing Apparatus wearers in both the  Fire and Rescue Service and Industry.  The FBT Instructor course ensures instructors have the abilities to safely operate FB units alongside the delivery of theoretical and practical training. In order to ensure that our FBTI course continues to meet learner requirements, a number of developments have now been incorporated, including extending the course to enable delivery of a more extensive and in-depth curriculum.

The new 10-day course includes:

  • Introduction to theory of wind driven fires
  • Practical wind-driven fire simulator to demonstrate the dangers of this phenomenon
  • Introduction of discussion arena for debate and analysis of relevant case studies to underpin and reinforce learning
  • Additional fire behaviour sessions in large compartments across our unique incident ground, providing the opportunity to use branch techniques with varying firefighting media
  • Sessions in lesson planning, exercise planning and learning cycle to enhance students' teaching, delivery and de-briefing skills

The FSC Fire Behaviour Training Instructor will enable learners to design and deliver theoretical and practical training in flashover, backdraught and fire gas ignitions competently and safely. Topics will include:

  • The science and behaviour of fire
  • Fire gas ignitions, flashover and backdraught
  • Container systems - gas and carbonaceous
  • Small scale simulation
  • Water application
  • Door Procedures
  • Branch techniques
  • BA equipment Training and exercise planning/control Incident study

After successful completion of the course, learners will be able to:

  • Instruct and have a sound underpinning knowledge of the principles of combustion
  • Instruct and have a sound underpinning knowledge of how fire develops and spreads within compartments
  • Instruct and have a sound underpinning knowledge of the methods used by firefighters to deal with and prevent fire development within a compartment
  • Instruct and have a sound underpinning knowledge of the safety procedures relating to training in fire development within compartment fire
  • Instruct and have a sound underpinning knowledge of how to implement safety procedures
  • Respond to the conditions within compartments
  • Demonstrate firefighting techniques prior to and after compartment entry
  • Demonstrate procedures for operating a carbonaceous CFBT facility
  • Conduct a Compartment Fire Behaviour Training session

Who should attend and key benefits

The FSC Fire Behaviour Training Instructor course is aimed at personnel experienced in the design and delivery of safe and effective compartment fire behaviour training in their fire and rescue service.

Learners should:

  • Have experience of compartment firefighting competent BA wearer
  • Be able to use technology appropriately to support learning
  • Be fit for full operational duties in accordance with brigade requirements

Successful completion enables the delegate to teach compartment fire behaviour, including flashover and backdraught, in a safe and effective way.

How is the course assessed and accredited?

Learners are assessed using a combination of practical and written exams. This course leads to an SFJ(A) level 3 accredited qualification in Compartment Fire Behaviour Training. Successful completion of this course will also result in the learners receiving 57.5 Institute of Fire Engineers (IFE) Continual Professional Development (CPD) hours.
