Advanced Tactical Incident Command in the Fire Service - Level 3

Course overview and learning outcomes

Designed for competent Station Managers or above who possess an in-depth knowledge of the Incident Command System and Civil Contingencies Act 2004 (Contingency Planning) Regulations 2005. The course focuses on the knowledge and skills required to provide an advanced level of tactical command and coordination at the largest and most serious incidents, utilising developed command support systems within a multi-agency environment.

Following the completion of the course the learner will:

  • Understand the principles of decision making when leading people to resolve operational incidents
  • Understand a tactical approach to resolving operational incidents
  • Understand command and leadership skills within Incident Command
  • Understand the principles of risk management when leading people to resolve operational incidents
  • Understand joint working and interoperability
  • Understand the principles of debriefing following an operational incident
  • Be able to evaluate the status of an operational incident
  • Be able to assume responsibility for action to support those involved in an operational incident
  • Be able to close down the operational phase of an incident.

Who should attend and key benefits

This course is aimed at operational FRS managers who:

  • Are deemed competent by their host FRS at Station Manager level or above
  • Are required to tactically command the largest and most serious incidents
  • Possess an in-depth knowledge of the incident command system and civil contingencies and resilience documentation

Building on the previous levels of Incident Command courses, this course will provide delegates with the necessary skills, knowledge and understanding required to be an advanced tactical incident commander. It focuses on the knowledge and skills required to provide an advanced level of tactical command and coordination at the largest and most serious incidents, utilising developed command support. Tested in the Simulation Suite utilising the innovative XVR technology.  

How is the course assessed and accredited?

Successful completion of this course will result in the award of the Skills for Justice Award in Advanced Incident Command in Fire and Rescue Service (QCF). This is a nationally recognised qualification developed by firefighter subject matter experts at the request of CFOA through Skills for Justice, the Sector Skills Council for the fire sector. The course is underpinned by National Occupational Standard EFSM2 – Lead Monitor and Support people to resolve operational incidents. The Fire Service College has developed a clear Learner Pathway for Incident Command levels 1-4.

Successful completion of this course will also see the delegates receive 30.5 Institute of Fire Engineers (IFE) Continual Professional Development (CPD) hours.
