Course overview and learning outcomes

The aim of this course is to provide the underpinning technical and practical skills required for persons wishing to undertake Fire Risk Assessments in Complex premises.

After successful completion of the course, learners will be able to:

  • Describe the legislative framework and the mechanism of enforcement of fire safety
  • Understand the generic principles of 'means of escape' and 'fire safety'
  • Appreciate the importance of structural fire protection
  • Evaluate the likely behaviour of building materials in a fire situation
  • Recognise the basic functions of fire alarms and emergency lighting
  • Advise on the selection and siting of fire fighting equipment and fire safety signs and notices
  • Recognise and interpret commonly used fire risk assessment methodologies
  • Conduct a fire risk assessment of a complex building
  • Determine the appropriate action to secure compliance with the Fire Safety Order
  • Complete a fire risk assessment report

Who should attend and key benefits

This course is for persons who wish to gain a qualification in Fire Risk Assessment. They may be new entrants to the industry or with Fire Safety Management responsibility.

Learners will receive an excellent grounding in core fire safety principles and skills, and be provided with opportunities to put these into practice in realistic scenarios.

How is the course assessed and accredited?

Assessment is carried out by submission of a post course Fire Risk Assessment to a template that the learner will be issued with. Upon successful completion of this, the learner will be awarded a Fire Service College Fire Risk Assessor qualification.

This course is recognised by the Institution of Fire Engineers and will contribute towards an application to be included on their register of Fire Risk Assessors and Auditors.
