Hazardous Materials Awareness / Operator

Course overview and learning outcomes

Our five-day, hazardous materials course comprises of and fully satisfies both the awareness and operator modules from the NFPA 1072 standard for Hazardous Materials/Weapons of Mass Destruction Emergency Response Personnel Professional Qualifications.

During the course, learners will be taught the basic hazards and risk assessment techniques associated with Hazmat and CBRNE environments as well as the skills needed to evaluate and work defensively at an incident suspecting or confirmed to have released hazardous materials.

On successful completion of the course, learners will be able to:

  • Identify hazardous materials containers
  • Recognise sources of hazardous materials response information
  • Identify types of hazardous materials
  • Identify properties of hazardous materials
  • Understand behaviours of hazardous materials
  • Use the Emergency Response Handbook effectively 
  • Employee response planning for hazardous materials incidents techniques 
  • Initiate a response to a hazardous materials incident
  • Correctly ‘don and doff’ personal protective equipment
  • Demonstrate decontamination operations
  • Demonstrate absorption, damming, diking, dilution, diversion and retention product control techniques
  • Preform remote valve shutoff, vapour dispersion and vapour suppression product control techniques.

Who should attend and key benefits

This course is designed for emergency response personnel who may be first on the scene of a hazardous materials emergency and who will be tasked with protecting people, the environment or property in the affected area.

How is the course assessed and accredited?

Learners are assessed against the learning outcomes throughout, using practical observation, which is underpinned by technical and practical skill assessments.

The written and skills testing must receive a passing score in order to receive a Pro Board certificate.
