Strategic (Gold) Command in Fire Services - Level 4

Course overview and learning outcomes

This course aims to accredit the knowledge and skills development of FRS learners in Strategic Incident Command. Achievement of the unit will confirm that people, once developed, are ready to work – but not competent - in the context of representing the lead authority and as a supporting authority.

This is the level of command exercised by the most senior operational commanders of a fire and rescue service supporting the on-scene operations with the authority to direct and commit resources. It includes the requirement to oversee, co-ordinate and support multiple off-site operations.

This course will deliver the qualification and provide trained Gold Commanders to attend the MAGIC course thereby improving the calibre of Fire Service learners, but also allow the MAGIC course to provide the focused development with a cohort of similarly qualified learners from all services.

 On successful completion of the course, the learner will;

  • Understand the roles and responsibilities of people and organisations within Incident Command arrangements at local, regional and national level
  • Understand command and leadership skills within Incident Command
  • Understand the technical issues being dealt with at tactical level
  • Understand the role of communications within the context of local, regional and national incidents
  • Understand how to manage people involved in incidents within local, regional and national contexts
  • Understand how to close down the strategic command phase of the incident within local, regional and national contexts
  • Be able to lead a strategic response to an incident within local, regional and national contexts
  • Be able to contribute to the debrief following the resolution of an incident

Who should attend and key benefits

This course is designed to assist the development of Fire & Rescue Service commanders in bridging the gap from advanced to strategic incident command and enable them to effectively and confidently contribute to the multi-agency or SCG roles. It also provides the opportunity to assist delegates to work towards the Level 7 Award in Strategic Incident Command in Fire & Rescue Services, which is available to Fire & Rescue Service officers attending the MAGIC course.

The course covers key issues for effective command at this level and also makes the perfect refresher for those wanting additional CPD in this area.

How is the course assessed and accredited?
