Practical Fire Investigation Level 5 Accreditation

Learners from the first two iterations of the Level 5 Practical Fire Investigation (FI) course recently attended a graduation ceremony at the College. Guest speakers included Steph Morris, Institution of Fire Engineers (IFE) and John Galvin, UK Association of Fire Investigators (UK-AFI).

Run by the College, and developed in collaboration with the College of Policing, the course is accredited by the IFE at Level 5, and meets the requirements of the Code of Practice for Fire Investigators, launched in May 2017. The Code is designed to establish clear standards to assist with the gathering and examination of evidence in any investigation.

James Holder, Course Director said “Fire investigation is about being thorough and bringing all the pieces of the jigsaw together, analysing why a fire has happened can’t be based on just one piece of evidence. This Level 5 course is unique in the way that it allows learners to investigate and dig out a real fire. The learners make the course, everyone engages and gets stuck in, which in turn makes life easier for the instructors.”

Steve Skarratt, Head of Prevention and Protection Training at the Fire Service College said “This course brings together fire investigators and criminal scene investigators from the UK and abroad. A shared interest in an event but with differing perspectives, promotes a valuable understanding of working practices, interagency working relationships and the need for a team approach. Working together, learners have the opportunity to practise skills in realistic fire scenarios on the College incident ground, whilst receiving expert guidance and advice.”

The course is a blended programme consisting of internet based pre-course study, followed by a one-week practical and theory course at the College. The course provides delegates with the underpinning knowledge and understanding required for the role of a fire investigator and develops investigative skills as a fire/crime scene investigator. It is suitable for UK and overseas fire services, police officers, scenes of crime officers and forensic investigators, and members of other agencies who may have a role in FI.
