The Wildfire Skills course provides firefighters and first‑line supervisors with the essential operational capabilities needed for safe and effective wildfire response. Learners develop core competencies in map reading, navigation, suppression tactics and decision‑making through a blend of classroom learning, 3D visualisation and practical, hands‑on scenario work. This course builds the confidence and technical skill required to operate efficiently on the Fireline and support high‑risk wildfire operations

This course is for

This course is for operational firefighters and first‑line supervisors who are or will be actively involved in wildfire suppression or who oversee suppression teams, including ICS Level 1 commanders and those working in wildfire high‑risk areas.

What you will learn

  • How to gather and interpret essential map and navigation information to support safe and effective wildfire operations.
  • How to assess conditions and select appropriate direct or indirect wildfire suppression tactics.
  • The ability to work effectively with other agencies, organise teams and deliver clear operational briefings.
  • Strengthen safety and welfare practice by applying safe systems of work, LACES protocol and effective incident‑ground communication.

Entry requirements

You are required to complete the online Level 1 Wildfire Awareness course prior to attending (you will be prompted on enrolment onto the course). It is desirable to have SFJ Level 3 Award in Initial Incident Command in Fire and Rescue Services.

Delivery format

The course uses a blended approach, combining pre‑course self‑study with two days of on‑site learning that includes 3D visualisations, interactive sand‑table scenarios and practical skills exercises supported by guided discussion, continuous assessment and reflective learning. The assessment consists of an online test, map reading assignment and observed practical application of knowledge and skills.

Duration: 2 days.
