Course overview

Fast‑track your instructor career with one intensive 3‑week programme.

Gain comprehensive fire craft expertise in one integrated programme. The Tactical Fire course combines three essential instructor-level qualifications - Breathing Apparatus Instructor (BAI), Fire Behaviour Training Instructor (FBTI), and Tactical Ventilation Instructor (TVI) - into a single, intensive 3-week course. Designed for those advancing their careers in fire safety instruction, this course equips learners to deliver safe, effective training across all three disciplines.

Breathing Apparatus Instructor (BAI)

  • BA procedures, equipment, and safety principles. Physiology of respiration, heat, and humidity.
  • Risk assessment and exercise planning.
  • Practical BA session delivery and debriefing.
  • Compartment Fire Behaviour Training Instructor (CFBTI)
  • Fire science, gas ignitions, flashover, and backdraught.
  • Container systems and small-scale simulations.
  • Water application techniques and BA equipment training.
  • Incident study and exercise control.

Fire Behaviour Training Instructor Course (FBTI)

The FBTI element of the course ensures instructors have the abilities to safely operate FB units alongside the delivery of theoretical and practical training. It has been updated to include fire training in large buildings and case studies to provide an extensive and in-depth curriculum.

The course covers topics such as the science and behaviour of fire, fire gas ignitions, flashover and backdraught, container systems (gas and carbonaceous), small-scale simulation, door assessments, water application and techniques, BA equipment training, exercise planning/control, and incident study.

After successful completion of the course, learners will be able to instruct and have a sound underpinning knowledge of the principles of combustion, how fire develops and spreads within compartments, and the methods used by firefighters to deal with and prevent fire development within a compartment. Additionally, they will know the safety procedures relating to training in fire development within a compartment, be able to respond to the conditions within compartments, and demonstrate firefighting techniques prior to and after compartment entry.

Key Benefits:

  • Design and deliver theoretical and practical training in flashover, backdraught, and fire gas ignitions competently and safely.
  • Understand how to implement safety procedures.
  • Conduct a Compartment Fire Behaviour Training session.
