Recruiting firefighters that meet the requirements of a modern day fire service and in to the future!

The demands on the UK Fire and Rescue Service to recruit new firefighters is now becoming a higher priority.

The profile of today’s firefighter is considerably different to that required ten or twenty years ago. Attracting and selecting for this new profile, whilst also increasing the emphasis on diversity is a serious challenge. Recruitment campaigns have to be more sophisticated and informative so that your communities are made aware that the ‘modern’ firefighter is involved more with community services such as fire prevention, safety in the home and well-being than fighting fires. This new profile requires different attitudes and skill sets and these must be taken in to account when making selection decisions.

Diversity in the workforce is also an important issue. Each Fire and Rescue Service needs to improve the diversity of its workforce to reflect the minority groups that exist within the community it serves. This involves for example attracting and employing more females and individuals from ethnic minorities.

A solution from the Fire Service College

2017 saw the roll-out of our tried-and-tested attraction, selection and training programme capable of delivering firefighters direct to your Service efficiently and cost-effectively.

The College has linked with experts in the digital social media, selection and assessment sectors to bring you a one-stop, unique approach, designed to address these current and common challenges with traditional recruitment:

  • Attracting applicants representative of the communities served by the FRSs
  • Difficulties in targeting specific demographics to attract a more diverse workforce
  • Exploitation of modern day media used by the target demographic
  • High level of resource required to manage volumes of applicants through the sifting and selection process
  • Skilled resource in-house to advise on, set up and deliver recruitment campaigns.

How we do it

Attract to Train offers an outsourced modular support programme which incorporates a myriad of touchpoints providing a bespoke partnership solution. We have broken down the recruitment process into three main stages or modules. Attraction, Selection and Training which are outlined below.
