Crime Scene Investigation - Stage 1

Course overview and learning outcomes

This four week course is delivered in collaboration with Integritas Global Consultancy (IGC) and is aimed at training those persons who are new to Crime Scene Investigation and wish to enter force at the first level as a Volume Crime Scene Investigator.  Delivered by former College of Policing and service Police trainers who have a vast amount of current operational experience, students will be trained by the best in this arena.  The course which is predominantly practical in nature, makes excellent use of the forensic training facilities where a range of scene examination techniques will be conducted and assessed in real time exercises.

The aim of this course is to train and qualify the delegates to become Volume Crime Scene Investigators to enable them to attend the scene of a crime or incident and process in accordance with recognised procedures. The following modules will be covered:

  • Introduction to the Police Service and the different roles
  • Photography
  • Introduction to forensic sciences
  • Packaging evidence
  • Recovery of trace evidence
  • Search methods
  • Statement writing
  • Fingerprinting
  • Early Evidence Kits
  • Drug Field Test Kits
  • Preparing for and Presenting Evidence in Court and at Other Hearings.

Who should attend and key benefits

Students must be enthusiastic and resilient with aspirations to pursue a career in crime scene forensics. Any demonstrable experience or aptitude in photography, report writing, or other forensic / investigative discipline would be advantageous.

Learners must also have recognition of competency by the relevant Scientific Support Manager and a recommendation that is supported by the parent force.

Price includes accommodation (Sunday evening to midday Friday), food and refreshments throughout the course. Facilities include free WiFi access, parking and use of the Sports Centre.

How is the course assessed and accredited?

The course is aligned (where applicable) to the following National Occupational Standards:  SFJCN301, SFJCN401, SFJCN402, SFJCN403, FSJCN404, SFJCN601, SFJCN801, SFJCN804.  Furthermore, the course is presently subject to assessment by an established UK forensic authority with the aspiration that full CPD recognition and approval will be attained in 2018.
