Understanding Health Improvement

The College has received approval as a Centre to offer courses leading to qualifications of The Royal Society for Public Health (RSPH). This means that the College is now approved to offer the RSPH Level 2 Award in Understanding Health Improvement. RSPH is a national awarding body that provides vocational health-related qualifications.

The qualification is for existing or aspiring health champions and volunteers who wish to improve the health and wellbeing of people in their local community by motivating and encouraging them to make positive lifestyle choices. The College is offering this e-learning based course as part of the popular Fire Fighter Development Programme or on a stand-alone basis.

Learners will:

  • Learn how inequalities in health may develop and what the current policies are for addressing these
  • Understand how effective communication can support health messages
  • How to promote improvements in health and wellbeing to individuals
  • Understand the impact of change on improving an individual’s health and wellbeing.

Ted O’Brien, Head of Learning & Development & Incident Command, says “We are delighted to have received approval as an RSPH approved Centre and to run this Level 2 Award.  Central to this qualification is helping others to improve their health and understanding how to promote and communicate improvements to health. It is relevant to operational and non-operational FRS staff carrying out Safe & Well visits in the community. Enabling them to identify and act upon not only upon fire risks but to health issues that may impact on quality of life or even life expectancy.”

The course is mapped the National Occupational Standards and functions of the Public Health Skills and Knowledge Framework (PHSKF) and Making Every Contact Count (MECC) guidelines.

RSPH is an independent health education charity and the world’s longest-established public health body.  As one of the leading providers of qualifications regulated by Ofqual, Qualifications Wales, and the CCEA, RSPH is committed to improving the public’s health through developing and delivering the most innovative and relevant qualifications.
