Fire Risk Management

With property risk management as one of their day-to-day key priorities, a team from FM Global, one of the world’s largest commercial and industrial property insurers, visited the College to find out more about fire risk, prevention and handling.

The day included classroom based activity looking at the expectations from fire services when arriving at a property fire, incident command procedures and management, the value of sprinkler systems, and discussion around a number of electrical fire case studies.

Moving out onto the College incident ground for the second part of the day, the team saw a series practical demonstrations including a pallet fire, use of fire extinguishers, a water on oil fire, a leaking intermediate bulk fire container (IBC) fire, and fire box demonstration.

“Fire remains the leading cause of property damage worldwide, yet it is also one of the most preventable property risks. At FM Global we conduct ongoing scientific research aimed at preventing and lessening damage from fire. Our visit to the College was a fantastic opportunity to hear from firefighters and to learn how they would respond to an incident at our client sites. We have our own training and it was extremely satisfying to see how aligned our organisations are with the advice we offer. The activities on the fire ground certainly drove home how quickly fires can spread and how devastating their effects can be.” Said Gareth Hughes, Senior Consultant Engineer, FM Global.
