Civil Protection Training

The Fire Service College was recently the chosen venue for civil protection training run by the EU Civil Protection Mechanism. Any country in the world hit by a disaster which overwhelms its response capacity can call on the EU Civil Protection Mechanism for help. It enables a more rapid and effective response to emergencies by coordinating the delivery of civil protection teams and assets to the affected country and population.

The training brought together 19 participants from across Europe to take part in the Modules Basic Course (MBC) which focuses on the crucial issues of self-sufficiency, coordination and interoperability when teams are deployed alongside units from other countries. The training included classroom learning and practical training, using role players to give added realism, based on civil protection scenarios.

The EU Civil Protection Mechanism runs a comprehensive training programme, offering experts from all over Europe a deeper knowledge of the requirements of European civil protection missions. The training helps experts improve their coordination and assessment skills in disaster response. Since 2004 over 8,000 training course places have been offered to Participating States, EU staff, partner organisations and third countries.

Since its launch in 2001, the EU Civil Protection Mechanism has received more than 200 requests for assistance. It intervened in some of the most devastating disasters the world has faced, like typhoon Haiyan that hit the Philippines (2013), the floods in Serbia and Bosnia and Herzegovina (2014), the Ebola outbreak (2014), the conflict in Ukraine (since 2014), the earthquake in Nepal (2015), and the refugee crisis in Europe.
