Firefighters take on the biggest ever BA challenge

This weekend’s national BA Challenge, which took place here at the FSC, was the biggest event since it first began nine years ago, with 15 teams from across the UKFRS taking part on Saturday.

Sponsored by Draeger Safety UK, the Challenge provided a tough test of strength and fitness for the firefighters, as well as an opportunity for them to demonstrate best practice, whilst putting their skills to the test in a series of demanding challenges, including incident command, fire ground procedures, entry control and use of breathing apparatus.

Congratulations to all of the teams who participated, in particular to the firefighters from South Yorkshire Central White Watch who won the 2016 Challenge, with Hereford & Worcester Broadway in second place.  And welcome to Cornwall FRS who this year entered a team for the first time.

Lee Sketchley, event organiser, from West Midlands FRS, said, “Rescuing people from difficult situations is part and parcel of a firefighter’s life and the BA Challenge offers teams from around the country the chance to demonstrate the skills they have developed to the highest standard. Nothing beats highly realistic training. Simulated scenarios are essential to help firefighters develop the skills they need in order to deal with emergency situations.”

Feedback from some of the competitors in the Challenge echoed Lee’s comments and praised the “great facilities at the College” and also the meals and service during their stay here.

Bernie Higgins, FSC Director of Training, said “The College has been supporting this event since it first began and is delighted to do so. Competitions such as the annual BA Challenge are vital to help raise the standards of performance in what is a risk critical area for fire and rescue services. We look forward to continuing to support the Challenge - and to an even bigger and better event next year!
