Firefighter Development Mentor

The Fire Service College are looking to recruit high-quality fire and rescue sector competent mentors, instructors and IQA staff to support the delivery of an exciting new Operational Firefighter Apprenticeship Scheme.  The apprenticeship is being delivered in conjunction with Knowledgepool, who are market leaders in the delivery of apprenticeship schemes. The scheme will commence in June 2019 and will be open to fire and rescue services and private sector organisations that employ their own fire and rescue capability. 

The following opportunity has been created as part of this scheme:

A full-time Apprentice Firefighter Mentor/ General Instructor post – East England.

The mentor will play a critical role in the delivery of this scheme and this is an exciting opportunity for experienced instructors, who have previously mentored junior firefighters and who are passionate about developing people. Successful candidates will get the rare opportunity to influence the development of the next generation of professional firefighters from across the East of England.

Successful candidates will be able to work from home but will be required to conduct regular visits to meet with learners and their line managers in their workplace, mainly in Cambridgeshire and Bedfordshire. During periods of spare capacity, they will be required to act as course directors or instructors at the Fire Service College in Moreton-in Marsh Gloucestershire addition to their mentor responsibilities.

Applicants should be available to commence employment at the Fire Service College from August 2019.


Salary: £35,000 pa + potential for bonus of up to 10%



  • Actively support, mentor and motivate a designated caseload of recruit firefighters through the Operational Firefighter Level 3 apprenticeship standard
  • Support learners across the entire learner journey, to help them with the timely completion of their learning goals and achievement of the standards required by ST0486/AP01 End Point Assessment Level 3 Operational Firefighter. Contact will be varied and might include face-to-face, email, Skype, webinars etc
    • Provide learners with tailored, high quality, information, advice and guidance to support progression
    • Actively engage the learners’ line manager to enable them to play a proactive role and support the learner to apply their skills in the workplace
    • Actively promote and monitor equality and diversity, safeguarding and health and safety requirements
  • Manage a designated caseload of learners
  • In conjunction with their line manager, identify and assess learners’ needs and put in place robust learning plans, with realistic and challenging goals, that enable learners to understand their personal journey and realise their potential
  • Have no less than monthly contact with the learner, ensuring that they are on track, embedding learning in the work place and meeting the guided learning hour (or total qualification time) requirement
  • Deliver high quality, informative and inspiring learning and development workshops to groups of learners
  • Provide support to learners to develop their Functional Skills in Mathematics, English, and IT
  • Observe the learner operating in the work place or in Realistic Working Environments (RWE)
  • Mark, assess and review work produced by learners to ensure it is of the appropriate. standard to reflect the learner’s qualification and meet the needs of the awarding body. Provide insightful, constructive and informative feedback to help the learner maximize their potential
  • Where necessary, support the learner in compiling their portfolio of evidence and assess the portfolio for relevance, authenticity and sufficiency
  • Ensure that learners meet the 20% off-the-job learning requirement
  • Take full ownership and accountability that learner information is input onto the Tessello LMS system in a timely fashion
  • To champion the Capita, Knowledgepool and FSC values
  • Conduct face-to-face quarterly reviews with the learner and the line manager
  • Support FRS in the development of teaching and learning methodology to include best-practice andragogical principles
  • In conjunction with the line manager, identify when learner is ready for EPA examination
  • Oversee and facilitate learner sign-up days at the Fire Service College or at FRS locations
  • Deliver role-specific training to new FSC talent coaches
  • As a Course Director or instructor, support other training delivery within the wider FSC business during times of spare capacity

  • 85% timely success to be maintained across the caseload
  • 100% accurate completion of learner progression reviews and all SFA/Ofsted related paperwork
  • 100% compliance with scheduled learner journey
  • 100% of learner work marked within 5 days of set deadlines
  • Responding to emails or requests for support through the Tessello system within 2 working days
  • Working with the administration team to ensure that all learners are registered and that start and end dates are accurately recorded

Experience & Qualifications (Essential unless otherwise stated)

  • Must have completed Initial Firefighter training and be an experienced firefighter
  • Be operationally competent as a firefighter within the least 3 years
  • A relevant fire and rescue instructor qualification, such as RTCI, BAI.
  • Demonstrate maintenance of operational competence by evidencing regular engagement in CPD
  • Watch Manager experienced [preferred]
  • Level 3 award in Education and Training or equivalent teaching qualification
  • ILM Level 3 award in Coaching and Mentoring (or equivalent) and previous experience [preferred]
  • Certificate in Vocational Achievement (CAVA) or equivalent [1] (essential, but can be completed within 6 months in taking up post)
  • Functional Skills in Mathematics and English at a minimum of Level 2
  • Full, clean UK driving licence

[1] This will be for upto 30 learners initially but may grow beyond this once talent coaches become more experienced and proficient and are therefore able to cope with greater caseloads.
