College Hosts Women in the Fire Service National Training and Development Weekend

The Fire Service College was the venue for the 17th Women in the Fire Service (WFS) National Training and Development weekend (16-18 June).  The event, entitled ‘When women support each other, incredible things happen’, was attended by 185 delegates representing fire services from across the country. International delegates included Fatoumata Samake, Mali’s first female firefighter, who was sponsored to attend by the United Nations.

With something for everyone, the weekend was a great opportunity for both operational and support delegates to come together and take part in practical activities on the incident ground and classroom based workshops.

The weekend started on Friday afternoon with a ‘Drum Café’ icebreaker, networking opportunities and opening ceremony. On Saturday, operational personnel had the opportunity to take part in a whole day multi-incident training scenario on the unique incident ground at the College.

Practical workshops open to all delegates included an opportunity to tackle the tunnels and confined spaces of the urban search and rescue (USAR) rig and to watch the search and rescue dogs at work. Other delegates tried their hand at incident command in the College simulation suite. Back out on the incident ground the “be a firefighter” experience gave delegates an opportunity “to have a go” at many aspects of the role of a firefighter, including hose running and  search and rescue in a safe air environment wearing breathing apparatus. Always a popular and thrilling experience, delegates had the chance to test their driving skills at the wheel of a fire engine. Classroom based workshops provided fascinating insights into fire investigation, trauma, being mindful, managing stress, first aid, and women and leadership.

Jules Gilbert-King, WFS Vice Chair said “We were delighted to be back at the Fire Service College again this year with more delegates attending than in recent years. The feedback from the delegates has been amazing which just encourages the team in WFS to work hard to ensure the next event is even better. The facilities at the FSC are fantastic for what we aim to achieve and we are pleased to be working hard on next year’s event already.”

The College looks forward to welcoming delegates to the 2018 WFS National Training and Development Weekend (8-10 June).

It was great to see such brilliant feedback from this years event:

"One of the greatest events I’m fortunate to attend and be part of.  Had I not been successful getting a place through my fire service, I was going to happily pay for myself to ensure I could attend."

"Amazing weekend, felt empowered and informed"

"Excellent event, I was hugely impressed with how delegates were supportive of each other, particularly in sessions"

"Had an amazing weekend. Totally different from what I expected."

"I have loved my time here.  This is my 3rd year and will continue to attend.  The experience I have gained here has been amazing.  Thank you all"

"I would thoroughly recommend attending the WFS weekend.  You gain an insight into the roles of others within the fire service family with great networking opportunities.  Great location and facilities and everyone was so friendly."

"It was a great opportunity for operational staff to strengthen their skills and training or to try something new, and for non-operational staff to increase their understanding and awareness around a range of topics."
