Visible warning signs

The following warning signs indicate a strong likelihood that the occupier concerned will become a victim of another home fire tragedy. If you spot any of these signs, you should seek professional advice from your local Fire & Rescue Service as soon as possible.

Smoking

Smoking is the number one cause of fire fatalities in the UK. Particular warning signs to look out for include:

• Overfull ashtrays, particularly if placed in a position where they could fall onto furniture, furnishing, newspapers etc.
• Smoking in bed
• Signs of cigarette burns in furniture or furnishings

Alcohol

Alcohol is a frequent and significant factor in serious fire injuries and fatalities, particularly when combined with common causes of fire.

Previous fires/burns

Evidence of previous fires suggests a significant risk, particularly if:

• There are signs of previous fires, especially if the circumstances remain similar to when the fires occurred
• If the fires have been set deliberately due to mental health issues
• Burn marks to legs/clothing/blankets due to being too close to a fire
