Specialist Hazmat Tutor

As part of our growth plans, the Fire Service College is seeking to recruit a dynamic, knowledgeable and experienced hazmats specialist to be part of our pool of associate tutors and work with our specialist team of respected trainers, who aim to deliver the very best in Hazardous Materials training.

The main purpose of the role is to provide a professional teaching capability in support of learning and development in the field of hazardous materials. You, will provide focused teaching and technical expertise across the range of core and civil resilience hazardous materials training and will be assigned Course Leader and Course Director responsibilities in line with the demands of the role.

The Hazmat Tutor role requires specialist knowledge and expertise in Hazardous Materials and Environmental Protection, including the relationship with Chemical, Biological, Radiological and Nuclear (CBRN) incidents. This specific post includes additional responsibility for learning provision on the Hazardous Materials Detection, Identification and Monitoring (HMDIM) courses.

Job Specification

  • To provide practical and theoretical specialist tuition in Hazardous Materials.
  • Act as Course Director (at times) and Safety Staff on incident ground exercises as required.
  • Undertake out-reach delivery at off-site locations as necessary.
  • Be responsible for the delivery of high quality learning and development.
  • Actively contribute to the creation of a positive and supportive learning environment which endorses and supports principles of diversity and equality.
  • Contribute to the direction and development of the Specialist Hazmats Team and the College as a whole
  • Maintain and promote links with relevant and appropriate external agencies, and provide College representation on relevant committees and partnership forums.
  • To help promote and ensure the health, safety and welfare of delegates, staff, visitors and contractors.
  • Maintain continuous professional development within role.
  • Act in a consultant capacity when required, in situations relevant to College business.

Experience

The successful individual will be responsible for teaching existing and experienced Hazardous Materials Officers and meeting their further development needs as Detection, Identification and Monitoring (DIM) Advisers.

This is a very specialised and demanding role and the successful candidate will need to possess excellent personal attributes along with significant knowledge and experience in the field of hazardous materials.

Essential

  • Recent experience working in the role of a Hazardous Materials Officer in a Fire and Rescue Service.
  • Management development in a Fire and Rescue Service commensurate for the role of Station Manager.
  • Successful completion of the College HMEP Course or equivalent.
  • Minimum of a level 3 teaching qualification (PTLLS or AET3)

Desirable

  • Experience as an operational HMDIM Advisor and successful completion of some/all of the HMDIM modules.
  • Experience in a training environment.
  • Successful completion of other Fire Service College Hazardous Materials courses.
  • Have performed the Hazmat Officer role as a flexi-duty
